Chapter 11, Question 2:
Privacy is a controversial issue in the Digital Age. Schools have an obligation to ensure student safety, both physical and virtual. When using the Internet or the network, this requires keeping close tabs on student’ activity when they are using computers. Do you think this violates students’ privacy? Justify your opinion and consider both points of view. I personally do not think this violates the student’s privacy. Students do not pay for the computers or the internet they are using while at school. When a school provides computers and internet for the students to use that is a privilege granted to the students. If the school has policies in place that the state what websites are allowed for the students to go on, then the students need to abide by those rules in place. If a student violates these policies they may have to suffer consequences set by the school, which may be loss of computer privileges on campus. I do see how you can see it from the point of view that would violate a student’s first amendment rights. The first amendment states that the students have the rights to go and express their opinion. In regards to the internet this may be on a social media perhaps. However, I feel that if you're going to use property that does not belong to you, you must follow the owner’s rules. Students are very well aware of the policies in place, most teachers go over them with the students on the first day of school. Some teachers have the students sign an agreement that they will only use the computers for educational purposes. Chapter 12, Question 3: Of the emerging technology trends presented in the chapter or those you discovered through your research on the Web, which emerging technology or trend do you think will have the most significant impact on education? I think one trend that could become very popular in the very near future would be learner analytics. Rather in public or private schools’ learners’ analytics can provide a huge insight to the students in their classrooms. Learners analytics provide a lot of data for teachers on their students. With learner analytics teachers can gage how to best prepare their lessons plans by reading the data the students have provided. The data can include information on what learning styles do the students prefer. This is an important factor because not every student learns in the same way. Every student learning preference falls in 1 one or more of the following ways, visual, kinesthetic, or auditory. Once a teacher reviews the data he or she can plan their lessons and focus on what style of teaching would best fit the needs of the students. In my personal opinion I really do think analytics will catch on in education. Analytics are already used in sports, business, and the medical field amongst countless more. I believe that applying analytics to education will help provide a more structured and productive learning environment for the students in the classroom. At the end of the day we need to do whatever we can to help the students become more successful in the classroom. Kahoot vs Quizizz: Kahoot allows the students to compete against one another on a subject of your choosing. Each question the students are given a certain amount of time to answer the question. There are multiple choice questions that are presented. For however fast the student chooses the correct point they are awarded a score. If the student chooses the wrong answer the receive zero points. At the end of all the questions the student with the top 3 score are shown to all participants. With Quizizz students are allowed to move at their own pace answering as quickly as they can. With Quizizz's it shows the students individual questions they got right or wrong, and it collects the data to show the teacher. Quiz Link: https://join.quizizz.com Access Code: 090764 ThingLink and Scoopit Reflection: I think Scoopit can be a really cool class project. You can allow the students to research and find websites or "scoops" that relate to their topic. Granted to ensure the students don't just read the title of the scoop, I might have them write a brief summary about each. Thinglink would be a useful way to present information to your class in a different way besides lecture. It has the students really using technology to learn about a lesson. I teach at school that is really wanting teachers to integrate technology into the lessons, so this will be a useful website for me. Below you can find both my Scoopit and my Thinglink on my website. Materials page Resources page Rubistar: Rubistar is a very handy tool for teachers trying to create a rubric for a project. This website formats your rubric to make it very neat and organized. I would highly recommend this website for all teachers regardless of the subject. The website is very easy to navigate, it does not require you to make an account to use it either. Below you can find a rubric I created. The rubric take very little time to create.

Chapter 9, Question 2: The Internet is a public communication area that many believe is protected by the First Amendment. Others believe that its contents should be moderated and the public protected from inappropriate content. What is your view on this controversial issue, particularly in light of the extensive use of the Internet in schools? Yes, I believe the internet should be protected under the 1st amendment. The internet provides people with a way to express their opinion or present the news, both of which are rights protected under the 1st amendment. As of today, millions of people use a plethora of social medias to express their opinions on a variety of topics. Today even multiple news media’s use the internet to get the news across to those with internet access around the world. I do see the other side however, people post videos or make websites that can be deemed inappropriate. There are things people search for online that can cause a high level of concern. There are websites that teach you how to make a bomb, there are illegal things to you can buy online. These are examples of things that you could want the government to shut down or block citizens from seeing. However, you could say that's one of the cons of freedom. People have the right to do these things. Americans all have the same rights has written in the constitution. We cannot make up new guidelines for freedom when it does not please our view of it. To me, that goes against what America was built on. Chapter 10, Question 1: There has been much discussion about whether distance education can provide students instruction that is equal in quality to traditional education. Do you think an equivalent experience is possible via distance delivery? Why or why not? In my opinion this is a tricky question, it really would depend on a variety of factors for me to properly be able to answer the question. There are pro’s and con’s to both a traditional learning environment and online learning. Traditional learning gives the student a more hands on approach to learning. They are physically in the classroom, they can get more 1 on 1 time if they need it. However, students can get bored and not pay attention in class if they find the lesson or the teacher not interesting. Therefore, students can be in the classroom and actually not learn anything at all. For traditional learning students must live in a certain range to be able to ride the school provided bus, or they must be brought to the school by other means. Online learning allows any student from any place to be able to attend the online class. The students can attend class from the comfort of their home. They are able to do their homework at their own pace as long as they turn in their work at the deadline provided. The negative may be that students may not get an immediate answer to their questions as they are typically asked via email. After completing the podcast and video projects, reflect your working experiences of creating multimedia materials, the challenges you encountered during your creation. You also want to focus on how you will use these technologies into your own classroom? How can authoring software help you teach and your students learn? Make sure to use Chapter 7-8 as your reference. You need to upload your movie to youtube and embed youtube video to the end of your blog. You can embed vocaroo audio to your blog as well but the link will be expired soon. So I want you to download your audio as MP3 file and upload it to your blog. You will also post the interactive Edpuzzle video class and access code to the end of your blog so that your readers will be able to access it. I found the movie story to be slightly difficult as I was trying to line up my audio discussion with the photos. The recording of information itself was not difficult, nor was it hard to find and upload pictures to iMovie . Really my only issue was just getting everything organized for the final product. This was my first time to use iMovie, I imagine as I become more familiar with the program I will be able to create movie stories easier. For my podcast, I found really no difficulty using Vocaroo. It is a pretty straight forward website. For my podcast I did a dissuasion related to the Civil War. The program I liked the most was Edpuzzle. I really liked that I could edit educational videos to only cover the information I wanted. It was really nifty that I could also add my own audio to the videos, as well as insert quiz questions into the video. That aspect will really hold my students accountable in the classroom, rather than have them zone out or sleep during the video. I know this upcoming school year I will be using Edpuzzle a lot in my classroom during my lessons. Podcast: Interactive Movie: Classcode: hadahes Movie Story: Teacher task software is abundant for instructors to perform all types of teaching and learning responsibilities. After completing the Google Docs projects, reflect your working experiences when collaborate with your group members by using Google Docs. You may want to focus on how you use these technologies into your own classroom and how Google Docs promote active learning and collaboration among students? Working together on projects can make work easier for everyone. It is important that everyone does their part to contribute to the assignment so the work is equal for all. I believe it is important to try to get your work finished at a reasonable time ahead of the deadline so your partners have time to review your work without being rushed. I plan on using Google Docs in my classroom for group projects as well. This past year in my history class I had my students create one Google Doc and collaborate to make a PowerPoint to teach the class. The students had to research their topic in their groups on Chromebooks, then work with one another to decide what information they wanted to teach. In my own experience students love projects that allow them to interact with their classmates. However, it is important to present a grading rubric to the students to hold each group member accountable. I've found in the past if you just put the students in a group and hope they all do their part, there may be some students who do significantly less work than other group members. I've found success in allowing each student to grade their group members based on their efforts and contributions to the project. Chapter Four 1. The concept of universal design suggests that all instructional activities should ensure equal access for all learners regardless of their unique needs. After reading the In Depth feature on universal design and examining its evolution from architecture to learning, consider how you might include universal design in your classroom. Do you intend to adjust your instruction to include universal design principles when you teach? Explain why or why not. I intend to incorporate universal design principles into my classroom. It is important that every student have the same opportunities to succeed in the classroom despite their needs. No child can pick the hand they are dealt, but they do the best they can to manage and succeed, we as teachers need to be willing to accommodate these students. Yes, we may have to make longer lesson plans, come up with things to do for differentiated instruction, or upload work online to use on a computer (for a variety of benefits), but in the end it is worth it. We teach to help all students succeed. Students with disabilities deserve the same chance to succeed in the classroom as well as those who have been blessed to live a 'normal' life. Chapter 5 2. Discuss the cloud storage. Why is it advantageous for educators to share resources and programs on a network? What concerns are associated with program sharing? The cloud storage is a way to store data on a hard disk at a remote location that is accessible online. It is to the educators to use network sharing for a few reasons, one of them being you can help cut costs of purchasing software by purchasing software from a software company at a lower rate. Typically, the software that you purchase from these companies can be used on any device on the shared network. Another benefit is that you can create a public storage area that will allow students to access computer files or data the teacher desires to share with them. There are many other benefits including, email, organizational tools (online calendar, address book, etc.), and shared hardware (printer, scanner, etc.). Challenges that can occur within program sharing are things like 1. Can you operate the basic functions of a computer? If you cannot, you will not get very far. 2. Funding. If the school cannot afford computer or the software, then they may not be able to see the needs of the students. 3. Staying up to date. Technology is something this is constantly evolving, if you do not have the most up to date programs or technological devices, issues may occur that your older model may not be able to handle the current tools needed. Chapter 6 3. You have learned about the challenges you will face in implementing technology in your classroom. How do you plan to meet these challenges during your pre-service and in-service career? Be specific in describing a strategy to meet each challenge. Pre-service I think it is wise to become familiar and comfortable with the technology you will be using in your classroom. Your students will look to you for guidance when a problem or question arises. If you do not know how to answer it, that really does not benefit anyone. As a teacher there are a plentiful amount of workshops that you can attend to learn about the latest technological devices and programs. I am lucky to be at a school that offers plenty of these workshops, I can speak from experience these workshops are a blessing. For inservice issues I would look first see what funding was like for my department to see if I am able to purchase what I require for my class. If the funding was not there I would seek it from the community. You would be surprised what business are willing to donate to help their local schools. Technology does advance no matter how up to date you are, it really is only a matter of time until a newer model is produced. I would try invest into programs that allow free upgrades to the software once a purchase fee has been delivered. Chapter 1. Question 2: Lifelong learning is not just a teacher preference; it is also a requirement for maintaining state certification. Technology literacy courses and workshops are some of the most popular learning experiences for certificate extension and renewal. Do you believe that taking additional courses in technology literacy is an important as those for your content or discipline? Is too much emphasis being placed on developing and maintaining technology competency? Defend your view. I believe it is important to be able to understand how to use technology. Technology is used in almost every aspect of life today. Today in education technology is used in classrooms all across America. I believe taking technology workshops are highly beneficial to todays teacher. I am a history teacher, I use different computer programs and websites in my classroom daily, many of these programs fit the needs of today's education. It is important that I understand and am comfortable navigating through these programs. I do not believe there is too much emphasis being placed on developing or maintaining technology competency simply because this is the way life is today. Every single person I know today uses technology. Technology allows teachers to provide other ways for students to learn the desired course material. In a classroom if you tell your students to go grab a textbook and read the chapter then answer the questions in the back of the book, why that will be acceptable for some students, not all students learn best that way. Technology allows for many different reliable sources for the students to learn that may better fit their needs. Technology can provide videos, articles, online programs, pictures, read-to-text, etc.. Chapter 2, Question 3: You have learned about a variety of technologies useful to support learning in this chapter. With which one of these are you most comfortable? Which are most useful in helping to prepare 21stcentury learners? Describe the technology and its potential applications in the grade level or content area you wish to teach and demonstrate why it is most appealing to you. The technology I am must comfortable using would probably the technology used to assess competency. Teachers need to be able to assess students to see if they have mastered the curriculum or not. Grading tests can be a long-time consuming task when done in a traditional manner, however, thanks to online programs today such as Google Forms, and EasyTestMaker teachers can create and grade tests in seconds. Other assessments programs such as FolioSpaces or Rubristar are great for creating rubrics or assessing projects and portfolios. Rubristar is very simple to navigate and use. It creates a syllabus for an assignment for your students in a matter of minutes. I think technology that helps foster creativity are the most useful to 21st century learners. Programs such as LiveBinder or Inspiration allow students to reorganize concepts they have learned in class into their own unique way. They also help students brainstorm new ideas and solutions to problems they may find with completing their work. Technology that fosters creativity are what I would strive to teach my students (9th-12th grade) the most, because it helps students develop critical thinking skills that can be used in the classroom and in life. These are valuable traits that can help improve a student’s future. Chapter 3, Question 1: Instructional planning is a skill every educator at every grade level must master. To integrate technology into instruction, a logical, sequential approach is needed to help teachers to clarify which technologies are most useful and at what points they should be included in the process. Discuss Design-Plan-Act (DPA) system – what it is, how the three distinct planning components of DFA differ, and why it is helpful to use a system approach to integrate technology? When integrating technology into instruction in the classroom the DPA help teachers clarify when technologies are most useful and at what points they should be implemented. The DPA system is broken down into 3 main parts: 1. Design- the overall content and sequence in the instructional unit 2. Plan- articulate the specific daily lesson plans needed to complete the unit 3. Act- develop an instructional action plan for each day of unit instruction This is a helpful system because it helps build the best possible learning environment for your students because all aspects of the lesson must be planned. A DPA system can help teachers identify what programs will help their students succeed in the lesson at-hand. Here are my google presentation and my story Hello everyone my name is Gary Lee. I'm working on my masters in teaching here at the University of Southern Mississippi. I plan to graduate in the fall semester in December. I am currently a social studies teacher at Pearl River Central High School. I recently finished my 1st year teaching, it was such a blessing, I love all aspects of my job. This online course (ITD 645) is not my first online class by a long shot, as you all should know the MAT program is an online program. I've easily taken 10+ online classes in my undergrad and graduate career. I'm familiar with some software skills, but really just the basics that Microsoft Office offers. I have used those products for all of my college career. I'm not really familiar with any new technology tools used in education today, so I assume by the end of the course I'll be experienced using them. My teaching philosophy is I am trying to get students ready for college when they come into my classroom. I also want to be able to accommodate all types of learners. I use Chromebooks in my classroom as a resource for students to take notes on, conduct research, and to use during review days on websites such as Kahoot and Quizlet Live. I teach history, history is nothing more than good story telling, you can make the class as interesting or boring as you want. I try to get students involved in the learning process to increase interest in the curriculum we are covering.
